F1 – 1st AD Protocol

The Producer also serves as the 1st Assistant Director on the F1 projects and is responsible for running the set. On the F1 projects, we utilize a simplified version of the school’s 1st AD protocol. It is simplified because there are fewer crew members and fewer technical considerations than on later productions, but it still follows the basic protocol of blocking, rehearsing, and going for picture.

You should study and practice these call outs ahead of time, so that you can use them with confidence on the actual shooting day…

Blocking/Marks
The DIRECTOR puts actors in first position and walks everyone through blocking of the action.
Make sure actors are clear on movement. If needed, place “marks” on the floor for the actor to “hit”.
Make sure DP knows what the camera move is.
Make sure Boom Op is clear on his/her position and get boom line (no boom in shot).
Once everyone is comfortable, move to a rehearsal…

  • “OK, we’re going for rehearsal”
