Tools Checklist

Students are required to purchase the following tools for use on set:

Work Boots

  • Tips: Don’t have to be steel toed, but sturdy and protective
    Uses: Protecting feet
    Positions: Universal
gloves

Leather gloves

  • Tips: Invest in a good pair! Hot hands on setwear is good when working with lights
  • Uses: Protecting hands
  • Positions: DP, Gaffer, BBE, Grip

  • Tips:

box-cutter

Box cutter

  • Tips: Doesn’t need to be fancy, just needs to cut
  • Uses: Cutting gels, visqueen, etc

screwdriver

Stubby flathead screwdriver

  • Uses: Screwing dove-tail and europlate together
  • Positions: 1st AC
cube-tap

Cube tap (x2)

  • Tips: Square shaped cube tap works well; plastic/rubber cube tap is fine
  • Uses: Splitting one edison to three
  • Positions: BBE, Gaffer, DP, 2nd AD
cheater-plug

Cheater plug

  • Tips: Useful for older houses that only have two-prong outlets
  • Uses: Changes two-prong outlets into three-prong
  • Positions: DP, Gaffer, BBE
edison-checker

Edison checker

  • Uses: Checking if outlets are working
  • Positions: DP, Gaffer, BBE
pliers

Needle-nose pliers

  • Tips: Useful to pull out scrims
  • Uses: Universal
  • Positions: Universal
crescent-wrench

6″ crescent wrench

  • Tips: Must be able to open to 5/8″. Can also use help undo mafer/cardellini.
  • Uses: Tightening screws and pipe clamps
  • Positions: DP, Gaffer
headlamp

Headlamp

  • Tips: Always have it!
  • Uses: To load truck at night time; useful to clock-in and clock-out
  • Positions: Universal
tape-measure

Small 12′ tape measure

  • Uses: Measuring windows for gels, door frames for dolly, etc
  • Positions: 2nd AC, DP, Gaffer, Grip, Producer

Wooden clothespins (C47s)

  • Tips: The school has C47s in expendables, but it’s always beneficial to have more!
  • Uses: Gels mostly, but you can get creative
  • Positions: Universal
notebooks

Small composition notebook

  • Tips: Get one that fits in your tool belt/pocket
  • Uses: Taking notes
  • Positions: Gaffer, BBE, 1st AC
scissors

Small scissors

  • Uses: Universal
  • Positions: Universal
sharpies

Sharpies

  • Tips: Get a few
  • Uses: Marking amps, camera marks, cups/bottles
  • Positions: BBE, 2nd AC, 2nd AD
pens

Pens

  • Tips: Get a few
  • Uses: Writing reports, paperwork, etc.

eye-protection

Eye protection (optional)

  • Tips: Get a small one that fits in your tool belt
  • Uses: Protecting eyes from dust
  • Positions: Gaffer, BBE, Grip
leatherman

Leatherman, Gerber, Multitool, etc. (optional)

  • Tips: If you have all the tools, you don’t need one, but sometimes can come in handy
  • Uses: Multi-use
  • Positions: Universal
earplugs

  • Uses: Protecting ears
  • Positions: Universal

  • Uses: Cloud wrangling, to see that light is pointing at subject directly
